A curious eye for words
The Curious Quill Editing is an independent editorial service specialising in proofreading and copyediting in speculative and metaphysical fiction.
For authors writing about consciousness, esoteric, mystical, spiritual, fantasy, and historical topics – fiction and nonfiction.
Whether the work is imaginative, scholarly, professional or simply difficult to classify, good editorial care begins with a good second pair of eyes.
Edited by an IPEd Professional Member with a background in linguistics, archaeology, and consciousness.
Your prose. Your vision. Expertly refined.
Editorial services
A careful, line-by-line read of your manuscript using Track Changes, annotations and comments to identify and correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, typographical errors, inconsistencies and formatting issues.
I also check the details that can easily slip through unnoticed, such as character and place names, capitalisation, hyphenation, dialogue, repeated words, continuity and consistency throughout the manuscript.
Where something requires your judgement, I'll flag it rather than make assumptions, thus preserving your voice and keeping you in control of your work.
Copyediting
A close pass for clarity and flow: awkward phrasing, repetition, unclear sentences, consistence and flow. I'll tidy what genuinely needs it, but I won't rewrite your voice or restructure your work. You'll always know exactly what needs changing and why. Read more.
Proofreading
The final check before your manuscript goes out into the world. I catch spelling, grammar, punctuation, typos, and consistency errors (names, timelines, formatting) – the things that pull a reader out of the story or undercut your credibility on the page. Read more.
I flag what needs fixing and clean up the obvious as I go,
without rewriting the voice you've spent ages finding.
About the editor
Kristina
My curiosity has always drawn me towards the past and the mysteries of human existence. I have studied archaeology, ancient history and ancient civilisations, later specialising in linguistics and the evolution of language – interests that led to work as a linguist and language specialist for some of the world's leading tech companies.
Alongside this, I have explored consciousness through past-life regression and spiritual regression, deepening my fascination with memory, identity, symbolism and the nature of reality and the universe. These threads – language, history, consciousness and the unknown – continue to shape the books and ideas I'm most drawn to today.
I created The Curious Quill Editing to work with writers who share that curiosity.
For me, proofreading and copyediting isn't about simply correcting words, it's about helping an author's ideas, imagination and voice come through with clarity, while preserving what makes their work uniquely theirs.
Who I work with
From a novel to nonfiction manuscript, or a substantial professional publication or periodical, the standard remains the same: careful attention to the words on the page that focus on specialist subjects, such as spirituality, consciousness, metaphysics, esotericism, philosophy, history and related fields listed in the ‘What I work with’ section below.
Fiction and nonfiction authors and writers, including independent and self-published writers of long-form or short form writing.
Authors & writers
Manuscripts for fiction or nonfiction published works requiring careful proofreading and copyediting.
Literary agents, publishers & small presses
Writers producing articles, essays, books and other digital content exploring these specialist subjects.
Creators & researchers
Publishers, journals, research organisations, institutes and organisations producing books, articles, publications, reports and digital content in areas.
Spiritual & scholarly organisations
For writers who'd rather not have to explain their subject matter before the editing can start, and are comfortable with being woo, out there, weird or unconventional.
What I work with
The Curious Quill is a good fit for thoughtful, atmospheric and imaginative writing, particularly stories and books exploring consciousness, spirituality, history, mystery, mythology and the anomalous.
I welcome romance, sensuality and implied sexual content, but I do not accept manuscripts containing graphic sexual content or explicit sexual scenes.
I also do not accept manuscripts centred on graphic violence, gore, sexual violence or gratuitously disturbing or exploitative material.
If you're unsure whether your project is a fit, you're welcome to get in touch and tell me about it.

The lists above are intended as guides rather than rigid categories. Genres and subject matter often overlap, and elements of nonfiction, history, philosophy or spirituality can find their way into fiction and vice versa.
Ultimately, your work doesn't have to fit neatly into a box. Wherever your imagination takes you, that's where the interesting work begins.
Pricing
Copyediting OR proofreading
AUD$125 / hour
Every project or manuscript is different, so I charge by the hour rather than by word or page. The time required depends on the condition of the manuscript, the level of editing required and the complexity of the work.
Before beginning, I'll review a sample of your manuscript and provide an estimate of the time, and cost involved. A 50% deposit is required to commence the project. The final invoice is based on the actual time worked and may be slightly lower or higher than the initial estimate.
Copyediting + proofreading – combined
AUD$115 / hour
When you need both copyediting and proofreading, I offer a combined rate at a reduced hourly price. Working across both stages allows me to work on copyediting and proofreading simultaneously.
Note: The combined copyediting and proofreading service works best in Microsoft Word, where I can use Track Changes and Comments to make and review editorial changes efficiently. See the FAQs below for more details.

I work with fiction and nonfiction, including novels, short stories, memoir, essays, articles and digital content. I also have particular experience and interest in manuscripts exploring consciousness, spirituality, metaphysics, esotericism, ancient history, linguistics and related subjects. See the above section ‘What I work with’.
-
Copyediting looks at clarity, flow, consistency, punctuation, spelling, grammar, typos, awkward phrasing and repetition while preserving your voice.
Proofreading is the final check for errors such as spelling, punctuation, typos and formatting inconsistencies.
-
I provide estimates that are based on the type of editing required or requested, the scope and condition of the manuscript, and the estimated time involved. We’ll discuss your objectives, goals and requirements, then I'll assess your sample before providing an estimate.
-
First, I’ll review your manuscript and edit a few pages from the beginning of the first chapter, and I’d like to assess a chapter from the middle and end of the manuscript. For shorter works, I’ll review the whole piece.
This allows me to assess the scope and level of editing required and provide an estimate of the time involved.
Once you’ve accepted the estimate and agreed to the terms, I’ll request a 50% deposit based on the estimated cost. Once the deposit has been paid, I’ll schedule your project and begin work.
Most projects take 2–4 weeks, depending on the scope and level of editing required. The manuscript usually undergoes about 3 passes to ensure everything has been checked thoroughly. I work efficiently and aim to return your manuscript as promptly as possible without compromising the quality of the edit.
Once the editing is complete, I’ll issue the final invoice based on the actual time required to complete the work, which may be slightly lower or higher than the initial estimate.
You’ll receive your edited manuscript along with an editorial report and style sheet. You’ll then have an opportunity to review the changes, after which I’ll carry out one final check to ensure your requested changes have been correctly addressed and that no new errors have been introduced.
-
For fiction and book manuscripts, I follow The Chicago Manual of Style, alongside the appropriate English-language conventions (Australian, UK or US spellings) for the intended readership.
For other projects, I work to the client's preferred style guide or organisational house style, ensuring consistency in spelling, punctuation, grammar and presentation throughout the content.
-
Microsoft Word (.docx) is preferred for copyediting and proofreading, as they allow me to work efficiently with Track Changes and Comments, and make it easy for you to review my suggestions. Google Docs can also be used for shorter pieces.
PDF files are suitable for proofreading, but are not recommended for copyediting, because they are less flexible for making and reviewing editorial suggestions where heavy changes are required. It’s not impossible, but takes longer.
-
Contact me first with some details about your project through the Query & Quote contact form below. I'll let you know what I need from you and how to submit your sample or manuscript.
-
Of course! I work with independent authors who are self-publishing, as well as writers preparing manuscripts for agents, publishers or small presses.
-
Yes. I work with short stories, articles, essays and other shorter-form content, as well as books and manuscripts.
-
No. My role is to improve and polish your manuscript while preserving your voice and intentions. I work with Track Changes and Comments in Word files, and annotations and comments in PDFs, so you can clearly see and consider every suggested change.
You will also receive an editorial report outlining the key issues identified in your manuscript, along with recommendations for further revision where appropriate.
-
I specialise in manuscripts exploring consciousness, spirituality, metaphysics, esotericism, ancient history, archaeology, past lives, non-human intelligence and related subjects. You can see some of my specialist areas in the What I work with section above, but the list isn't exhaustive.
If your manuscript explores a subject that isn't listed, such as magic, witchcraft, veganism, medieval fiction, or something more unusual, feel free to ask. If it's within my areas of knowledge and interest, I'm happy to discuss it.
-
No. I don't use generative AI to edit or rewrite manuscripts. I use professional editing tools, such as PerfectIt, Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat, to assist with consistency, formatting and error checking. I use these tools to support my work. These are not generative AI tools.
The only AI used is to generate images for aesthetic reasons on this website.
